John Cabot, who was seeking his own western route to Asia, found North America. Mistakenly believing that the place he landed was Asia, claimed all of north America because of the flag planted by him. -

New France
Jaques claimed Canada for the French and started the fur trade. The French became business parter with the Natives, especially the Hurons. -
Jamestown: The First English Colony
Jamestown was founded by some English Merchants who thought it would be easy to defend if they built it on a swamp. During the starving time, James Smith came and helps Jamestown by becoming friends with Pocahontas, daughter of the Natives chief near by. -
Starving time in Jamestown
After John Smith returned to England, the Indians refused to trade with the settlers without Pocahontas and Smith to act as go-betweens. Because of this event, only 60 out of 500 Smith had left in the fall remained alive. -

John Rolfe married Pocahontas, which brought peace to the English and the Natives living near by. -
New Netherland
New Netherland was founded by Henry Hudson, an explorer who tried to find a northwest passage. He claimed land aroung New York and also started a city called New Amesterdam, and their main trade item was fur. -
Connecticut: New England Colony
Connecticut was found by Thomas Hooker, a puriton who did not always agree with the rules in Massachusetts. He pursuaded 100 other people including his family to move to Connecticut Valley, which later became Connecticut. -
Proclamation of 1763
This british action prohibited colonists from crossing the line that divides the east and the west and keeping the Native Americans and the colonists killing each other. -
The stamp act
The British had to pay the dept from the French and Indian war, so they came up with a way to tax the colonists, the stamp. The British made a new law that requires everyone in the colonies to purchase a stamp in every paper product -
The Quartering Act
The quartering act ordered colonial assemblies to provide the British troops with housing. They were also told to provide them everyday items. This act was for the colony's protection. -
The Townshend Acts
Charles Townshend taxed goods that imports to America such as glass, paint, paper and tea. Townshend believed that colonist's behaivor made it important to keep an army in the colonies -
The tea Act
The British East India Company lowered the tea price after getting hurt badly from America's Boycott. The British have thought they could trick Americans to buy taxed tea. This was supposed to help help the company. -
The Intolerable Acts
THe British King thought the tea act was going too far and the British should take full control over the colonies. New series of harsh lawas such as closing the Boston Harbor until all the tea was paid. -

The Battle of Bunker Hill weakened the ties between the colonies and Britian because this was the first battle of the whole war.This battle showed the Britians their ability to fight back. -
The Siege of Boston (The British Abandon Boston)
The Siege of Boston was when the Patriots stole cannons from the Britians and pointed them to the city where the Britians were staying. This forced the Britians to leave Boston with loyalists. The seige of Boston weakened the ties between the colonies and britian because the Patriots proved that they could beat the Britians. -

The Colonists sent a letter to the king declaring peace, but ignored by the King. An olive branch is a old way to say peace. The Olive Branch Petition weakened ties between the colonies and Britian because the colonists found out that the king does not believe in peace. -
The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson to declare freedom from the Britian's grasp. It was proofread and fixed so it would not offend the Britians. -
Battle for New York
The British and the American had a battle in Brooklyn. The Americans were very confident but lacked experience. The British had many experienced troops. After 2 days of war, the British lost 377 men and the Americans lost 1,407 men. -
Trenton
Washington caught the British by surprise on christmas morning by ambushing them. Washington was able to capture 868 prisoners without sacrificing any of his soldiers. -
Saratoga
British General Burgoyne decided to attack saratoga spring, even when the were outnumbered, the Americans fought and the general Burgoyne accepted defeat. After this event the Spanish and the French decided to help the Americans. -
Yorktown
The Americans tired out the British and then cornered them when the Britians stayed in Yorktown. Cornwallis waited for support and supplies but the French blocked the harbor to make it impossible, which forced Cornwallis to surrender. -
Treaty of Paris
To avoid war, the American and the British met in France to sign agreements. The three major agreements are -

-Britain give America the land that ranges from Canada to South Florida
- America (U.S) return all the taken properties of the loyalists during the war
The Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary war. -
Ratification of the Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States of America. The article gave the congress some important powers, such as the rights to start war or peace and print money, but the congress was not allowed to tax people. -
Shay's Rebellion
Shay's Rebellion started because of the farmers getting arrested for unfair dept. The money they owed helped the Revolutionary war. -
Constitutional Convention
The Constitutional convention was kept a secret so the members were not under any pressure by the press. The father of the Constitutional Convention is James Madison, because he wrote more than 600 notes during the convention. -

The Ratification of the U.S Constitution divides the government in 3 branches. The 3 branches are the Judicial Branch, the Legislature Branch and the Executive Branch. -
The Louisiana Purchase
The French sold Luisiana for a cheap price because they knew that it would take them a lot of time and money to maintain the area. Also they realized that America was going to have a war with the French any for Luisiana so they thought that selling it would be more profitable. -
Spain gives Florida to the U.S.
Jackson tried to purchase Florida because many runaways and slaves went to Florida. However Andrew Jackson failed to purchase Florida, he killed many spanish settlers in Florida. The Spanish signed the Adams-Onis Treaty to sell Florida for 5 million dollars and get the 'right' to keep texas forever. -
The Indian Removal Act
Jackson started the 'Indian Removal Act' to get all the land the Native Americans owned because of the natural resource around the area and for more space. The Native Americans were asked to move to the 'Indian Territory' and was promised to be able to live there forever. Some Indians moved voluntarily and some resisted. -
The "Trail of Tears"
The Native American tribes that were forced to travel to their 'promised land' had to go to a path called 'trail of tears'. Many Natives died on the way from hunge and diseases. -

One of the issues that upset Northeners was when the Congress refused to consider anti-slavery petitions in Washington D.C. The Congress had no choice because they had no power to interfere slavery in the U.S. -
One issue that upset the Southeners
The Southeners were very upset and angry about the Northeners assisting the slaves to escape to the north. This was like people robbing the southener's bank. Slaveholders demanded a fugitive law to prevent the slaves from escaping and recapture the runaway slaves. -
Texas is annexed
Texas remained independent even though many Texan wanted to be part of America. Later the congress voted to annex Texas. -
Oregon Treaty
Jedediah Smith have started the Oregon trail, a new way to go to Oregon. Later many settlers went west to get rich. Polk convinced and won the election by saying that he would annex Oregon but ended up with half of it. -
War with Mexico
America started a war with Mexico so America can get the rest of the land to complete the Manifest Destiny. Mexico lost the war and signed the Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo, an agreement to sell the rest of the land for 15 million. -
second issue that upset Northerners
The Kansas-Nebraska act stated that the issue of slavery in territories would be decided by popular sovereignty. Since the Kansas was next to Missouri, a slave state. Northeners thought that if they did not act and stop it from becoming a slave state, the rest of the territory would become a slave state too. -

The book, Uncle Tom's Cabin became the most sold book after the bible in America. The book was about a slave called Tom and this book moved many people in the North and raised awareness of slavery. The Southerners were upset about the book, thinking that this book might end slavery. -
Start, end, and reasons for civil war
Civil war started on April 12, 1861 because Lincoln could not let the south or the confederates to seperate from the Union. 24 states of the Union verses 11 states of the Confederate made it look like the Union would win easily. The Confederates started the war by attacking Fort sumter. The Confederate won the first few battles but the Union fought back and won the rest of the battles. The Confederate lost on April 9, 1865 and America became United again.
