    Agreement for land

    "The Narragansett’s made this deal with Roger so they could add one more resource to the area around the Cove: English trade goods. By giving the land to Roger the Narragansett now had close access to these trade goods without having to deal with Boston or Plymouth."
    Narragansett Indians agreed to Rogers deal because of the prosperity and trade lines gained between them and England.

    Banishment of Roger Williams

    In 1635 Roger Williams was banished from Rhode Island and the people of Massachusetts were going to get him but John Winthrop told him to get out of Massachusetts.Roger Williams traveled without a bed or food for 14 weeks in the bitter cold. In 1663 he got permission from the king to create his colony officially.

    Starting democracy

    With no official church in Providence, every head of household could vote. In the other English settlements, one had to be a member of the church to vote. No taxes were to be collected to support any church. In the other English settlements, taxes were what built the meeting houses. Even today there are no taxes to support churches so it goes until 2018.

    The Verin Case

    Joshua Verin bought a piece of land next to Roger Williams and in 1638 he got a letter saying that he beat her to the point of danger of life. Beating your wife or putting her in her place was allowed but not putting her in the danger of life. In the spring of 1638, Joshua Verin was banned from Rhode Island.This case appears to be the first time a legal action was taken which supported a woman’s decision.

    Going back to england in 1643

    The purpose of the first trip in the summer of 1643 was to obtain a Charter for his colony. Massachusetts Bay Colony, Plymouth and the other English Colonies in New England had legal documentation in the form of either a Royal Charter or a Company Charter.
    Roger Williams went back to England for three years to get a charter from the King to allow him to have an independent colony because Massachusetts and Connecticut were trying to take RI from him.

    Announcing Freedom From England

    On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island was the first colony to renounce allegiance to Great Britain’s King George III and declare independence by official legislative act. The passage of the Act of Renunciation by the Rhode Island General Assembly took place at the Old State House on Benefit Street in Providence, Rhode Island. This Act officially ended the colony’s allegiance to Great Britain.(1783 was when the revolutionary war ended)
