The first substantial resistance from CSA forces, most of whom were young and inexperienced. Shermans troops win easily. -
Battle of Milledgeville
Milledgeville, then the capital of Georgia, is taken without opposition by Sherman. They Ransack the town and, drunkenly, hold a mock trial in the courthouse whether Georgia will rejoin the Union. -
Discovery of Camp Lawton
Shemans army discovers Camp Lawton, a POW camp for Union soldiers, and was described as a concentration camp. Shermans men are enraged at the conditons their fellow soldiers were held in. -
Waynesboro
CSA Gen. Joseph Wheeler skirmishes with Gen. Judson Kilpatrick. Despite Inflicting heavy casualties on Union, Union considered it a victory because it screened Wheelers forces from Shermans during his March to the Sea. -
Arrival at Savannah
Sherman arrives at Savannah, Georgia, which was being defended by 10,000 CSA under Gen. William Hardee. Hardee held on for 10 days while Sherman prepared to attack. However, realizing the futility of defending, he slips out on the 20th to fight another day. -
Sherman takes Savannah
Shermans troops take Savannah, and writes to Lincoln "I beg to present you as a Christmas gift the City of Savannah, with one hundred and fifty guns and plenty of ammunition, also about twenty-five thousand bales of cotton." Sherman becomes a celebrity in the North and the most hated man in the South.
