  • Navigation Acts

    Britain didn't allow colonial merchants to trade certain goods with anyone besides the British and only allowed them to use British ships no matter how much more expensive it was. Colonists began smuggling to avoid these laws.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Parliament stops all western movement at the Appalacian Mountains and this makes the colonists angry because they already bought land west of the Appalacian Mountains.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    This act lowers the tax on sugar, but now the British actually collect anad enforce the tax. This makes the colonists angry because when the tax was higher they just didn't pay it at all, so the tax is "higher" for them now.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act taxed all legal documents. The colonists were angry because they felt like the British should not be able to tax them from so far away, they should only be taxed by local governments. The colonists used mobs, violence, and rallies to show their frustration.
  • Declaratory Act

    Declaratory Act
    This act stated that Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for the colonies. This made the colonists angry because they felt that only their local government should be allowed to tax them. The colonists also wanted a say in what was done with their money.
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    This act put taxes on imported goods such as glass, tea, and paper. The colonists formed groups such as the Daughters of Liberty, and urged Americans to wear homemade clothes and to produce their own goods instead of buying from the British.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The East India Tea Company was given the right to be the only tea distributer to the colonies and they could cut out the merchants and just sell directly to the colonists. The colonial merchants called for a boycott and colonists vowed to stop the East India Company's ships from unloading. When three ships docked in Boston the colonial governor ordered them to be unloaded and at midnight, a group of men dressed as Mohawks boarded the ships and threw 342 chests of tea overboard.(Boston Tea Party)
  • Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts)

    Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts)
    This act closed the Boston harbor until the Massachussets colonists payed for the ruined tea, took away rights such as town meetings in New England, and forced people in Boston to to shelter soldiers in their homes. This was meant to punish Boston by isolating them but instead the other colonies sent food and clothing to Boston to support them. Also, the colonists were angry because this act took away their rights.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    This act set up government for Quebec, and gave Quebec the area west of the Appalacian Mountains and north of the Ohio River. The colonists were angry becuase their land claims were being ignored. The colonists expressed thier feelings by naming the new laws the Intolerable Acts.
