Early Childhood
In my early childhood I did not have parents or family who read to me or with me. -
Kindergarten
In kindergarten my teacher's name was Mrs. Watch and she was very motivated to help me learn to read. -
Middle school
In middle school my family moved a lot, and I missed lots of school and I fell behind in reading and most academic areas. -
High School
In High school if I had to read aloud my struggles showed and I felt embarrassed and as if I was not good enough. This was a huge part of me not liking school at this age I remember feeling scared of ever being called on to read aloud. I dropped out of High school at 16 years old. -
Young adulthood
In 1998 I became a mom and being able to read to my children with confidence was important to me. So not only did I try my best to increase my reading skills but I also went to my local college and received my GED. -
My childrens education
As my children stated school I made the decision that I would be involved in their schooling as much as possible. So I spent one to two days a week in the classroom with them. This gave me the opportunity to listen to their teachers read aloud to them. This showed me what a dedicated involved teacher looked like and made me want to be just that some day. -
Facebook
Facebook played a large role in my reading, spelling, and grammar. When social media became popular and daily texting and reading and writing communication became a part of my normal life I started to become a strong and more confident reader. -
College
Entering College at the age of 38 I was still not fully confident in my reading ability and was intimidated still to read in front of the class. In this time I knew that I would not let my lack of confidence in reading aloud drive me to not complete my goal. So I slowly started to feel more and more confident in these reading situations one of the things that helped me was to see others not always be totally sure of themselves to know I was not alone in this struggle. -
My Childrens elementry education
Two teachers in my children's elementary education really shaped me into the reader I want to be. I would not only listen to them read to the classroom at story time but I would get to listen to them one on one read with students or small group. I got to learn the different techniques they use to engage the students interest and help them grow as readers. -
Today
Today I feel that I am a strong reader. I will do read aloud with not only my children but in schools for work or volunteer. Even though I feel confident I will tell the children that even I make mistakes and if I do please correct me do not make fun of me and this is also who would should treat everyone.
