  • 776 BCE

    1st Olympic Games

    The games were held every 4 years and lasted at least 5 days. The games included music and athletic contests.
  • Johann Basedow founded the Philanthropinium

    The Philanthropinium was a school for boys located at Dessau. The program was based on the philosophy of naturalism and the needs of each individual.
  • Freiedrich L. Jahn developed the Turnverein movement

    An association for gymnasts. The movement expanded all over Germany and then migrated to the U.S.
  • 1st turnplatz was established

    Turnplatz is an outdoor exercise area that has equipment for jumping, vaulting and balancing. This exercise area created an area where gymnast can practice.
  • Application of P.E. in school curriculums

    Interest in education began to grow. Private schools increased educational opportunities for women. Free public education slowly became available for girls and boys.
  • 1st YMCA opened in the U.S.

    The 1st official YMCA was founded in London. YMCA was created to help with the growth of physical education.
  • 1st intercollegiate competition began

    A crew race between Harvard and Yale was held. Intercollegiate competition grew to play a major role on college campuses.
  • Dudley Sargent founded the Sanatory Gymnasium

    A school to prepare future P.E. teachers to utilize his scientific and comprehensive approach towards physical education. Some of her notable students were Thomas Wood and Luther Gulick.
  • The Boston Conference on Physical Training was formed

    Mary Hemenway, with the help of others, organized and led the conference that would bring leaders in physical education together to discuss and evaluate different systems. The program allowed leaders to use the best P.E. program to serve the needs of the Americans.
  • 1st modern Olympics was held

    The modern Olympics was held in Athens. Participation was limited to males and only four sports were involved.
  • Delphine Hanna became the 1st U.S. woman to be a full professor of P.E.

    Delphine attended Dudley Sargent's school and accepted a teacher position at Oberlin College and then was promoted into a professor. Delphine's training program evolved into one of the first professional prep programs for P.E.
  • Luther Gulick helped form the Playground Association of America

    The association promoted the development of urban and rural playgrounds. It later evolved into the National Recreation Association.
  • The Selective Service Act was created

    Called men between the ages of 18 and 25 to serve in WWI. 1/3 of men were found unfit to participate in the army.

    Depression Years

    Due to the 1929 stock market crash, budgets were cut and 40% of P.E. programs were cut. Physical educators became more interested in recreation programs.
  • The National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball was formed

    This organization was created to provide an association for smaller colleges. A few years later the name was changed to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
  • The National Athletic Trainers' Association was founded

    As sports programs grew, the demand for qualified individuals were needed to treat athletes and create programs that prevented injuries. Individuals like physical educators and coaches took on the responsibility to become an athletic trainer.
  • The Special Olympics was founded

    Educators were convinced that disabled individuals would benefit from participating in sports and P.E. The Special Olympics provide competitive opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
  • Physical Education Public Information Project began

    PEPI was created to inform the public and educators about the value of P.E. This project promoted "physical education is health insurance."
  • Title IX was created

    Title IX states "No person in the U.S. shall on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Ever since the Title IX was created, the amount of women involved in sports increased.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act was passed

    A landmark law that seek to end discrimination against individuals of all ages with disabilities. The ADA requires all facilities to provide equal access and services for people with disabilities.
