Homestead Act of 1862
Gave 160 acres of land to settlers for free. Expansion of railroads. -
Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862
Under this law, the govenrment could give grants of land to states to institute colleges of agriculture. The states made the decision to built schools on that land. -
Sand Creek Massacre
"Miscommunications" caused Colone John Chivington and his troops to attack the Native Americans at Fort Lyon. This ended in murder of over 150 Native Americans of a winter camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho. -
National Grange
An organization established in 1867 to benefit and educate farmers. It's official name was The Order of Patrons of Husbandry. -
Battle of Little Bighorn
Took place between the U.S. and northern tribe Indians. The Sioux Indians defeated the US (Custer and his troops were surrounded and slaughtered.) -
Dawes Act
Gave the President of the US permission to supervise American Indian tribal land and divide it for individual Indians. -
Ghost Dance Movement
Ghost dancing was an American Indian spiritual movement. They believed that faithful dancing would speed up the ressurection of their dead relatives. -
Battle of Wounded Knee
An U.S. army surrounded a group of Big Foot's Gist Dancers and demanded that they surrender their weapons. This massacre left 150 Native Americans dead. -
American Indian Boarding Schools
A U.S. schooling system aimed at making Native Indian children more "American." These children were taken from their families, taught English, and stripped of their culture. "Kill the Indian, save the man." -
The Populist Party
The Populist Party was a policitcal party created by members of the Farmers' Alliance. They supported free silver, federal income tax, and government owership of railroads. -
Panic of 1893
Financial panic caused by a drop in the U.S. gold reserves. During this investors cashed in their investments for gold, the stock market fell, and people lost their jobs. -
Election of 1896
William Jennings Bryan v William McKinley: McKinley one and the populist party started fading.
