    Martin Luther King Jr.: He wanted equality for African Americans and used nonviolent protests. He helped create civil rights act. Benjamin Mays: He spoke against segragation and for education. He was the first black president of the Atlanta schoolboard.

    1946 Governor's Race/ End of the White Primary
    In 1946, African-Americans could vote for governor. After Eugene Talmadge died a month after being elected, nobody knew who was governor. Herman Talmadge, Ellis Arnold, and M.E. Thompson all thought they were governor. Eventually, it was decided that M.E. Thompson was the governor.

    Herman Talmadge
    His father was the governor, but dies in the middle of his term. The Georgia legeslature decided that Herman should serve the rest of his father's term.He created the state forestry commission and improved the the prison system.

    1956 State Flag
    In 1956, Georgia got a new flag to represent the ended segregation.The confederate flag was incorporated to intimidate some people.
  • Sibley Commission

    Sibley Commission
    Governor Ernest Vandifer Jr. was told that he was required to either shut down public schools or desegregate them. He created a General Assembly Committee on schools, which was supposed to end school segregation. John Sibley led the effort.
  • Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA

    Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA
    Holmes and Hunter became the first two African American students admitted to UGA. UGA was one of the most segregated universities in the south.   • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    Residents of Albany launched a protest to end segregation in everyday life. MLK Jr. joined the movement one month later and it became national news. It was a learning experience for him and everyone in Albany.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington

    Civil Rights Act
    Andrew Young: He was the former Atlanta mayor. He encouraged African Americans to vote. He helped draft the civil rights act.     Lester Maddox: He appointed many African American's to state office's. He created state parol and any Georgia citizen could talk to the governor.

    Maynard Jackson as Mayor of ATL
    He was the first African American to serve as a mayor of a major southern city. Many minority buisnesses grew and he helped create better oppertunities for African Americans.
