Abolitionism Began
People began fighting for the freedom of slaves and aided their escapes. -
Missouri Compromise
Tried to preserve the balance between free and slave states by admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Prohibited slavery north of the 36 degree 30' latitude line. -
Tariff act of 1828
A tariff passed during Andrew Jackson's presidency that put a high tax on European goods and forced Americans to buy locally. Southerners hated the tariff, as they had to spend more money on supplies for their plantations. -
The Nullification Act
South Carolina passed this act saying that they wouldn't pay the "illegal" tariffs putm on European goods. Military action had to be taken to get the people of South CArolina to pay the tariffs. -
Start of immigration
An influx of foreigners moving to the U.S. to find jobs and a better life. Many people from america didnt like this because they were loosing jobs(The foriegners took the jobs for cheap).

Fugittive Slave act
Part of the compromise of 1850. California became a free state. This act alklowed people to take escaped slaves from free states and take them back to the plantstsion. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Allows people in Kansas and in Nebraska to decide for them selves if they want slavery or not -
Bleeding Kansas
Series of violent political confrontations in the U.S involving slavwery. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott vs Sandford. This said slaves were not citizens and that the missouri compromise was unconstitutional -
Raid on Hapers Ferry
John brown led an armed slave revolt by seizing a U.S arsenal at Harpers Ferry. -
Election of 1860
Northern states won the election, bringing Abraham Lincoln as the new president of the United States.
