    At the Constitution Convention it was agreed that every 3/5 slaves would count for representation in Congress. Helps lead to the Civil War because as states were added debates over free states versus slave states increased.
  • The Missouri Compromise of 1820

    The Missouri Compromise of 1820
    Congress wanted to maintain the balance of free and slave states. Therefore, they allowed Missouri to enter the union as a free state and Maine as a free state to keep the balance of free and slave states.

    The United States wanted Mexico to release Texas and gain more territories. Gaining these territories would cause conflict between North and South about whether these territories would be free or slave states.

    The Underground Railroad was going against the Southern States. Harriet Tubman who was the leader of the Underground Railroad was a runaway slave who risked her freedom and life returning to the South to free more slaves. Harriet Tubman was a symbol of rebellion to the Southern people and they feared her.

    The Compromise allowed California to enter the Union as a free state and the territories of Utah and New Mexico would be decided by popular soverignty. Conflict grew because allowing people to choose would make people from both north and south move to fight for slavery or freedom.

    Law enforcement officials had a duty to arrest anyone suspected of being a runaway slave. The officers got a bonus for each slave they captured. The slaves did not have rights to a trial.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe was apart of the abolitionist movement. She wrote a book which is very popularily known today as "Uncle Tom's Cabin". This book was an anti-slavery novel that was about the hidden truth about slavery. People say that it the book"helped lay the ground work for the CIvil War.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act allowed the people from Kansas and Nebraska to choose if they would like to be a slave or free state. The people would choose wit the use of popular soverignty.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    The Dred Scott Decision stated that a former or slave will never be considered a citizen. Since they will never be considered citizens that had no rights in the federal court. People believed that it threatened their liberty.
  • Presidental Election of 1860

    Due to Abraham Lincoln being elected and becoming president it caused some Southern States to secede from the Union. The Southern States thought that Lincoln had intentions of abolishing slavery. This caused tension.
