    The Missouri Compromise 1820
    The Missouri Compromise is the balance of power in Congress between slave and free-slave states. Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a slave state. This effected the civil war by causing more tension between the North and South states.
  • John Brown's Raid and Nat Turner (slave rebellion)

    John Brown's Raid and Nat Turner (slave rebellion)
    Nat Turner's Rebellion occurred in Southampton County in 1831, and John Brown's Raid occurred on Harper's Ferry in 1859. Both of these events were up rises of slaves for their freedom. Influenced people to fight for the cause.

    In 1837 John C. Calhoun stated that slavery was a "positive good." Calhoun believed that Blacks were inferior. This lead to the Civil War because of the sectionalism of ideas that divided the country

    President polk annexted Texas. Negotiation of the Oregon treaty and the results of the Mexican American war allowed for this to happen. The places that were gained were Texas, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Washington, and Oregon. This effected the civil war by the division of the states between the North and South.

    Manifest Destiny was the believe that the United States had the God given right to expand West. This idea caused the annexation of Texas and lead to the Mexican-American War. It also caused the Civil War because it disturbed the balance between free and slave states.

    First war on foreign soil. Mexico was upset that Texas no longer belonged to them. They threatened the United States about it. They would annex Texas and would cause war. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo would then be signed in 1848. The civil war would be an effect of this war because the U.S. would gain territory and fight for what the states would be considered a free State or a slave state.

    This treaty ended the Mexican-American War, giving the United States the victory. It gave the US territory owned by Mexico prior to the war. Led to the Civil War because it brought in states that caused the unbalance of free and slave states; leading to conflict.

    Consists of 5 laws passed which dealt with slavery. It had to due with California which wanted to enter the union as a free state. Introduced by senator Henry Clay. New and more effective fugitive slave laws. This effected the civil war by causing tension and elevating the crisis between North and South.

    The fugitive slave act was passed due to the compromise of 1850. Seizure and return of a runaway slave. The civil war was effected by this because the free states were enraged and the South was pleased by this.

    The election of Abraham Lincoln was not well received by the South, as the were concerned that he would end slavery. A year after his election the Civil War began (1861). Slavery ended with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862-1863
