  • Aid to Afghan Rebel

    Reagan wanted to help the Taliban in fighting againt USSR. He had multiple meetings with them to discuss their plans. The reason Ronald decided to back up Afghanistan was because the Soviet Union invaded them on this day.
  • Tax cuts

    Reagan wanted to cut down on government spending which caused a risk of bugdet deficits. There was a 25% cut tax spread over 3 years which was the largest in history. He began planning that tax reduction during this month of this year.
  • Deregulation

    Reagan's goal was to eliminate price controls on oil and gas. The Highway Traffic and Safety Administration reduced its demand for air bags and higher fuel efficiency for cars to help in that process. Oil windfall profits tax were lowered throughout this month.
  • Cutting Social Programs

    President Ronald Reagan thought it was best to cut or reduce social programs such as welfare, food stamps, medicare, student loans, and housing subsides. Most of these examples resulted in a high deficit. This day the student loans were reduced.
  • Reagan tells Eureka College Students about Soviet Union

    Ronald Reagan told college students that the Soviet's defense spending would eventually cause their communist system to collapse from debt that was spent on military weapons. This relates to "Peace Through Strength" that Ronald made for military build up which ended up causing a budget.
  • Reagan proposes Strategic Defense Initiative

    "Star Wars" or SDI was his development of weapons that would be able to intercept and destroy incoming missiles.
  • Aid to Nicarguan Contras

    Nicaragua was fighting the Sandinista Military. Congress prohibited the military aid to other countries. Secretively, individual people in Ronald's administration sold weapons to Iran in exchange for the American hostages. It made its way to the news and the public.
  • Reagan and Gorbachev sign INF Treaty

    The two men signed the treaty to destroy the use of nuclear weapons. Economies for both countries went back up after the treaty. The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was the beginning of the end of the Cold War.
  • Shift of Judicial Balance

    The president wanted to try to bring a strict constructionist outllook to the federal judiciary. He wanted someone that would follow the original intent and wording of the constitution without expanding the meaning. After 3 associate judiciaries, Reagan appointed Anthony Kennedy who took the associate's place when Ronald left office.
  • Reaganomics

    Ronald Reagan combined monetarism and supply-side economics together. He wamnted to keep the interest rates high. When Ronald became president the unemplyment rate was at 7.8% and by the end of his second term, it was down to 5.4%.
