The Atomic bomb was the center of the Cold War. It struck fear into civilians and if either the US or the Soviet Union stepped out of line an atomic bomb would wipe out both countries. -
Yalta Conference
In 1945 the United States, Britain and the Soviet Union met at Yalta where they agreed to divide Germany into zones of occupation. During this conference Stalin agreed to give free elections in Eastern Europe and go into war against Japan. -
Harry Truman
Born May 8, 1884 in Montana. Truman helped to form NATO and the United Nations. He also implemented the Marshall plan to help Western Europe rebuild after WWII. His Truman Doctrine came from his vow to end communism which made the Cold War very difficult. Died December 26, 1972 in Montana. -

The Formation of The Warsaw Pact
When the Soviet Union began to think of NATO a threat they formed the Warsaw Pact with East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. Like NATO if one country was threatened then all countries in The Warsaw pact were too. -
The Vietnam War Begins
A war against the french colonial government in South Vietnam, ho were allies with the US, and against the Vietnamese communists, who were sides with the Soviet Union. The US rushed in to fight because they feared if the communists won the war communism would spread all over Europe. -
Soviet Union Takes Over Hungary
The Hungarian Communist leader, Imre Nagy, formed a new government that promised free elections and the Soviet troops departure from Hungary. The Soviet Union did not like this so they invaded Hungary and set up a communist government. -
Sputnik Launched
Sputnik was the first artificial earth satellite that was launched into space by the Soviet Union. Since the Soviet Union and the US were in constant competition with one another it caused the US to step up it's technological advances for space. This also caused a great fear for the people of the US and they called this the Sputnik crises. -

Nikita Khrushchev
Born April 15, 1894 in Russia. Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of the Soviet Union after Stalin. He led the Soviet Union through the most tense years of the Cold War and was part of the stand off of nuclear weapons during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Died September 11, 1971 in Russia. -
The U-2 Incident
A United States U-2 plane was shot down in airspace of the Soviet Union and the US initially denied any claims that it was on a mission to spy on the Soviets. Although when they found the living pilot and almost entirely intact plane the US had to admit that the plane was a Covert Surveillance Aircraft. -
John F. Kennedy
Born May 29, 1917 in MA. Kennedy warned the people of the US of the Soviet's arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles and pledged to revitalize American nuclear forces. He also smoothed out tensions with the Cuban missile crisis. Died November 22, 1963 in Texas. -
Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba.
An invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles with US support to overthrow the communist government and Fidel Castro. The invasion failed. -

Cuban Missile Crisis
A period in the Cold War where the Soviet Union moved nuclear Missiles to Cuba in case of an attack on the island from the US. This created a large ammount of tension and was the closest moment to nuclear bombing in the entire Cold War. This was stopped when the Soviet Union leader pulled the bombs out of Cuba in fear of war. -

After Alexander Dubcvek created his own form of communism in Czechoslovakia known as socialism with a "human face" (Which destroyed censorship and gave citizens more freedoms) the Soviet Union disagreed and attacked Czechoslovakia giving them a new communist government under the Soviet Union rule. -
