1850 - 1854, Govenor Douglas bought 14 parcels of land from the first nations. Which came to be the douglas treaties.
- Allowed them to hunt and fish on unoccupied land

Cariboo road was built because it was dificult to bring supplies to the mining camps, because of the quensel river being to rough to travel through by boat. Therefore they created Cariboo Road. (It was a total of $1 ,000,000 !)

After gold started to run out, everyone became bankrupt. Britain believed that having two colonies was too expensive, therefore they united Vancouver Island and British Columbia. -They became in debt because of the cariboo road, they didn't have enough money to pay taxes and/or buy land.

The NWT act made Regina their capital city , with a small government council

British Columbia became Canadas 6th Provice, In exchange they wanted this from Canada :
- Canada to pay their debts , 2. A road built across the road to the pacific , 3. Annual Payments

After previously rejecting Canadas offer of confederation, In 1873 Prince Edward Island (PEI) agreed to their offer on 6 conditions.
- Canada to pay off their debts , 2. Annual Payments , 3. Canada to take over the cost of building the railway , 4. Canada to provide a year 'round steam boat service , 5. 6 MPS in the house of commons , 6. Canada to buy back land from Britain

Catholic schools were now permitted to have speerate schools to teach in only the french language

The Council was replaced with elected members instead of oppointed members

Newcomers wanted their children to be educated in english, therefore in 1892; Ordinace #29 made it so only english was the language of instruction

NWT was given responsible government which soon wasn't enough as the population increased

Originally, The northwest teritories declined Canadas offer of Confederation but in 1930 there was the great depression, causing everyone to lose their jobs. The conlony was about to go bankrupt because they didn't have enough money to pay their debts.

During ww2, the candian and u.s.government built military bases inside of the colony, providing them with jobs.
