The executive order 8802 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 25th,1941, This was to prohibit racial discrimination in the national defense industry. The "Secret life of bees" takes place in the late 60's where racial discrimination was still prominent. The executive order 8802 would make drastic changes for the black community, offering them equal opportunity. -

The twenty-fourth amendment prohibits both congress and the states from making the right to vote on payment of a poll tax. Poll taxes appeared in southern states as a measure to prevent African-Americans from voting. The loophole in the voting system was a tool used to keep African-Americans from gaining equal opportunity. When "Rosaleen" went to vote the three white men asked if she was going to the meeting, and they also harassed her for trying to vote. -

Albany Movement In november of 1961, the residents of Albany Georgia launched a campaign to eliminate segregation in all aspects of social life.
