Second Spanish Revolution

  • January, 1930

    Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera presents his resignation to Alfonso XIII due to a series of health problems
  • August, 1930

    The pact of San Sebastian was the one in where the repubublicans and the socialists reached an agreement to overthrow the monarchy. Then they will establish a democratic republican regime.
  • 12 April, 1931

    The king kall to elections. It was understood like a referendum on the monarchy. The monarchies won the elections, but in the importants cities, such as Madrid, the win was of the republicans.
  • 14 April, 1931

    The 14 of April of 1931 the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed. Then, the Revolutionary Committe becomes the Provisional gobernment
  • June, 1931

    There were elections in the Constituent Assembly to choose the parties to lead the Republic. As the result of these elections the winners were PSOE and PRR. In this constitution there were some modernist ideas such as the popular sovereignty; the dovision of powers; the declaration of the civil and collective rights and the Statues of Autonomy.
  • 1931-1933

    The black biennium. When Niceto Alcalá - Zamora became the president of the Republic made some reforms to the consitution:
    -The subordination of the army
    -An agrarian reform
    -The Jesuits were expalled
    -The Statue of Autonomy for Cataluña was passed
  • 1933-1936

    The black biennium. In November of 1933 a new elections were called. These were the first ones in where the women could vote in the Spanish histoy. As the result of a win of the PRR the leaders of PSOE called a general strike in 1934. In October 1934 there was a strike formed by nationalists, anarchists and communists. As a consequence of this, Cataluña declared itself independent.
  • 1936

    The Popular Front. This was created before the elections. This defended the amnesty for the political prisioners. The party was lead by Jose Calvo Sotelo. The Popular Front won the elections with anabsolute majority. There was a change in the presidency of the government, Zamora was replaced by Azaña.
  • July, 1936

    The 12 of July, 1936 Lieutenant Castillo, a socialiist, was murdered by a men from the right-wing. To leave things alone, they hit him back with the murder of Jose Calvo Sotelo.There was planned a rebellion by the General Mola under the control of Jose Sanjurjo. This armed rebellion was formed by carlists and the Fascist Flange. The 17 of July the rebells took the control of some places such as Melilla, Ceuta and Tetuán. The Spanish Civil War was started.
