Invention of the CRT
In 1897, Karl Ferdinand Braun created the Cathode Ray Tube, which fired electrons onto a fluorescent screen where the electrons were modified to display an image.

Touchscreen Displays
E.A. Johnson is most considered the person who invented it. It works by having your finger take in a tiny bit of electricity, which the display notices. -
Vector Displays
In 1958, Vector Displays were invented and used by the US SAGE air force. Vector Displays work by drawing lines to certain coordinates instead of showing each individual pixel. -
Invention of the Liquid Crystal Display
In 1964, a man by the name of George Heilmeier created the Liquid Crystal Display, a display that used a layer of Liquid Crystal and the backlight to polarize the pixels to show different colors. -
Plasma Displays
In the University of Illinois, 1964, Donald Bitzer created the first Plasma Display. Which uses ionized gas, which then becomes plasma and then lets out light. -
The Invention of the LED display
James Mitchell invented the LED(Light Emitting Diode) screen while working for NASA in 1977. Though only used one color, because blue LED lights were hard to come by at that time. -
Invention of the OLED
Ching Tang and Steven Van Slyke created the first Organic Light-Emitting Diode while working for Eastman Kodak in 1987. OLED screens work by emitting light when electricity is applied to nearby electrodes. -
DLP Display
Texas Instruments created the first Digital Light Processing displays in 1987. DLP displays work by using loads of tiny mirrors laid out on a semiconductor chip, with each mirror representing one pixel. -
The first use of LCDs in VR
In 1991, Sega released the first VR headset to use LCD displays, showing one for each eye. But not many people liked it. It had a bad refresh rate and even worse graphics. -
CRTs being discontinued
Invention of LED displays lead to CRTs being discontinued, because LED displays are faster and higher quality. -
LCD phones
The first phone to use LCDs was the Ericsson T68, although it didn't have touchscreen, it was an amazing invention at the time. -
Modern day VR
Throughout the years, VR has been getting better and better. Recently the Meta Quest 3 was released. It used LCD displays with pancake optimization and a 2,064 by 2,208 pixel resolution, allowing for the headset to be much lighter and slimmer.
