Scottsboro Boys Are Arrested
A fight broke out between white and black men on a Southern Railroad freight train. An angry posse stopped the train and nine black boys were arrested for assault. The boys were also accused of rape by two white women named Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. -

Roy Wright's First Trial
Roy Wright is tried on April 9th, 1931. He gets a different punishment from the jury than the other eigtht Scottsboro boys. The trial ended in a hung jury, resulting in Roy Wright getting a life sentence rather than a death sentence. -
Powell v. Alabama
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Scottsboro Boys were not given the right to counsel which violated the Fourteenth Amendment. The Nine boys would be given another chance to plead innocently. -
Samuel Leibowitz
Samuel Leibowitz takes the case to try and defend the Scottsboro Boys. He was a Northern Lawyer who was extremely persuasive and had won many of his previous cases. -
Haywood Patterson's Second Trial.
Haywood Patterson was tried for a second time under Judge James Horton. During the trial, Ruby Bates enters in attempt to defend Haywood Patterson. She states she was Victoria and they had never been raped. She also says that she and Victoria were with their boyfriends the night before, explaining the sperm found in their exmaination. Despite the evidence, Haywood Patterson is sentenced to death. -
Judge Horton's Change of Mind
The result of Haywood Patterson's second trial was the death sentence. Judge Horton set aside the conviction and Haywood Patterson was given another chance. -
Seven Scottsboro Boys Trial Under Judge Callahan
Seven of the Scottsboro Boys, not including Roy Wright or Eugene Williams, were tried again. The boys were again found guilty and sentenced to death, -
Norris v. Alabama
The U.S. Supreme Court found that black people had been discluded from jury rolls. With an all white jury it was certain the Scottsboro Boys would be unable to win. Keeping black people off the jury rolls violated the Fourteenth Amendment, and the Scottsboro Boys were granted another trial. -
Ozie Powell Attempted Murder
Ozie Powell was being trasported back to the Birmingham Jail when he pulled out a knife and slashed Deputy Edgar Blalock's throat. In defense, Deputy Edgar shot Ozie Powell in the head. Both of the man survived. -
Charlie Weems Parole
Charlie Weems was the first Scottsboro Boy to be granted parole. Later, Andy Wright and Clarence Norris were granted parole, only to be sent back to prison after leaving Alabama. -
Haywood Patterson Escapes Prison
Tme most hated Scottsboro Boy, Haywood Patterson, escaped from prison. He was angered that he was unable to get parole while the other boys did. -
Andy Wright Parole
The last person from the Scottsboro Boys in prison was Andy Wright. He was granted parole almost a year after Haywood Patterson escaped prison.
