    Geocentric Theory

Ptolemy stated in A.D. 100's that the geocentric (earth-centered) theory was correct. Since the telescope hadn't been invented and nobody had proof of anything different, they just took word on what he said.

    Roger Bacon

Roger Bacon was unique compared to most people in the 1200's. He decided he didn't believe in religion and ancient beliefs like most people had. It did not seem correct to him. Mainly because most of the people had no idea what science was and never tried to find new things about the world. They probably didn't know there was more to the world.

    Magic

Europeans believed science and magic were almost equivalent. Alchemists would change lead to gold and call it magic.

    Banned Book

Copernicus published a book titled De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium. It was banned by the Roman Catholic Church. This was many years after his death.

    Copernicus' Book

Copernicus' theory was the heliocentric theory which meant that all planets revolved around the sun. Since the ancient belief was that the planets revolved around the earth, nobody paid attention to his book because Copernicus did not have proof, it was only his thoughts.

    Vesalius Book

In 1543, Vesalius published a book about the human body and how it works. This is so important because people needed to know how their own body worked and what is happening inside the body.
  • Calculus

Isaac Newton developed the branch of mathematics called calculus. It is still learned in school today so it made a big improvement in mathematics.
  • Science

Even the meaning of the word science changed. Science used to mean "to know" but since so much has been proven, the meaning is changed because "to know" would be too broad for everything shown about science.
  • Kepler's Second Law

Kepler discovered that the closer planets are to the sun, the faster they will move. This helped discover more about astronomy.
  • Telescope

Galileo created his own telescope. He was determined to do this because he agreed with the heliocentric theory and wanted to prove this theory to everyone. Nobody would listen without proof. Church scholars said this contradicted the bible and that the telescope was an invention of the devil.
  • Kepler's Third Law

Kepler's Third Law determines how long it should take for a planet to make a revolution around the sun. This is important because it relates to time and seasons.
  • Antoni van Leeuwenhoek

Antoni was the first man to discover bacteria. Though Galileo created the telescope, he used it to study other things. Once he discovered bacteria he called them animalcules. Bacteria is everywhere so this was a big discovery.
  • Galileo Trial

Since Galileo created the telescope and proved the heliocentric theory against ancient beliefs, he went on trial. He was held under house arrest until he passed away in 1642.
  • Chemistry

Robert Boyle supported chemistry and found that temperature and pressure affect the space a gas occupies. He created the base and now we know so much more about temperature and pressure.
  • Oxygen

Oxygen is so important to people and other living things. It's so weird to think that at one point nobody knew what was in the air before Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774.
