    The Industrial Revolution marked a major turning point in human history. Simple steam machines were adapted for use in manufacturing and transport. This was a transition period where human-based labour and animal-based labour was replaced by machines.

    Flight

    The first controlled, powered and heavier than air human flight occurred. This marked a turning point in transportation and technology which revolutionised the movement of people and goods around the globe. This technology overcame the limitations of the natural world and brought the idea of exploring the stars a step closer to reality.

    World War I and World War II

    In this era humans adapted technology in the form of weapons and battle hardened vehicles. Killing was achieved on a massive scale with the use of increasingly sophisticated weaponry and chemicals. This era also reflected the role governments play in determining the fate of its people, and ultimately the fate of the planet.

    Atomic Age

    The use of atomic bombs brought an end to WWII and ushered in a new age in the power of science and its effects on humans. A new form of nuclear energy could be harnessed for a level of destruction never before seen. Nagasaki and Hiroshima tragedies contributed to a general fear of death or mutation.

    The difference in philosophy between the USA and USSR Governments led to intense mistrust and paranoia, and eventually the threat of the Earth's total destruction through nuclear weapons. Communism was seen as a threatening, invasive force, where you couldn’t necessarily recognise your enemies

    The efforts of humans with technology led to the fulfilment of the human dream to explore beyond the earth. Neil Armstrong's 'a small step for man' became one of the greatest moments in human history. Humans now had the means to travel through space and explore outer worlds.

    Computers were used initially in industry and over time became more widespread and personalised. Today Computer use is embedded into all we do. They represent the latest step in technology influencing human history.
