Robert Hooke with cells
English physicist Robert Hooke looked at a slice of cork from a cork oak tree using a microscope lens and noticed rectangular boxes and called them cells. He was the first person to use the word cell to identify his observations. -
Redi disproves spontaneous generation
Francisco Redi, an Italian physician preformed an experiment in which he had two jars. In one jar there was rotting meat and in the other jar, there was the same meat except it was covered from the top. He had done this experiment to disprove spontaneous generation which is the belief of living things rising from non-living things. -
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, Dutch businessman, was the first person to see and describe bacteria. -
John Needham
John Needham was a Scottish Clergyman/naturalist. He had shown how when a bowl of soup had been exposed to the air contained many micro-organisms.He claimed that there was a life force present in the molecules of all inorganic matter along with there air and oxygen in it. He believed that tis could care spontaneous generation to occur. -
Lazzaro Spallanzani
Spallanzani was an Italian abbot and biologist who tried variations on Needham's soup experiment and determined that soup in a closed container would be spoilt and how micro organisms that caused the soup to spoil had entered from the air. -

Robert Brown, Scottish botanist, discovered the cell nucleus. -
Matthias Schleiden
Using his own research and research of others, Matthias Schleiden concluded that all plants are made of cells. -
Theodor Schwann
One year after Matthias Schleiden's claim, Schwann studied more on it and reached the same conclusion with animals. -
Rudolf Virchow
Rudolf Virchow proposed that new cells are formed only from cells that already exist. ''All cells come from cells'', he wrote. With all their information combined, it had formed the cell theory. -
Louis Pasteur
Louis Pasteur determined by performing an experiment that soup exposed to air only, was spoilt if the air was dirty or not filtered.
