Abbe de L'Epee founded Institut National de Jeunes Sourds de Paris and used manual methods of teaching. Jean Massieu was the first deaf teacher of deaf students.

Thomas Braidwood and the Braidwood family heavily guarded their teaching secrets. Used manual methods to teach, but focused on oral speech and writing. -
Spread into America
Thomas H. Gallaudet wanted to learn from the Braidwood's, but did not want to work for them in order to learn their teaching methods. Thomas met Laurent Clerc and convinced him to come back to America in order to help teach American deaf children.
