Programs in the Early 1900's
Inspired in part by a book by Robert Hunter called Poverty,

all started various food programs in the cities. In rural areas different efforts also begin to get warm food or ways to heat up food for children. -
Early Federal Aid
Because of the depression of the 1930's, Malnutrition became a national concern. Federal action was taken from 1933-42 to aid both agriculture and the school lunch program. -
More states approve lunch programs
15 States pass laws specifically authorizing local school boards to operate lunchrooms -
Milk Program Instated
What started in early 1940's became an official part of the Child Nutrition Act in 1960 -
Child Nutrition Act of 1966
Expanded some existing programs and acted as a base law to pass further improvements upon. -
1968 Amendments
A few amendments were added, most importantly eligibility for participation in the program was expanded. -
Breakfast Program becomes permanent
Students with low family income are provided breakfast at a free or low price. -
