The Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife of Austria-Hungary are assasinated by some Serbians. The illusion of nationalism caused groups of people to form in Serbia, thus leading to the assassination of the Archduke and his wife. -
Germany's 'Blank Check' to Austria-Hungary
Germany sends a "blank check' promise to Austria-Hungary. This meant that Germany promised that they would support Austria Hungary no matter their decision on how to punish Serbia. -
Austria-Hungary Declares War on Serbia
The Emporer of Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia only a month after the assassination of the Archduke. -
Germany Declares War on Russia
Germany declares war on Russia shortly after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia, France, Great Britain, Italy, and the U.S. would eventually form an alliance and would call themselves the Allied Powers. -

The Zimmermann telegram was delivered to the U.S.. It clearly stated the unity of Mexico and Germany against the U.S.. -
The United States Joins WWI
President Wilson asks Congress to declare war on Germany. On this day the U.S. officially joined WWI. -

Once the United States joined the war, we needed more troops to fight. So the Selective Service Act was passed and men were drafted to battle. -

WWI officially comes to an end and Germany and the Allies sign an Armstice. -

Germany signs the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty states that Germany caused WWI, and they will pay war reparations. The signing of the Treaty of Versailles caused disillusionment in the Germans and they felt weak and defeated. -

The Dawes Plan
Around this time in 1924 the Weimar Republic accepted the Dawes plan. Because Germany was having a difficult time paying war reparations, the Dawes plan reduced those payments until the German economy was improved. -
The Young Plan
At around this time in 1929 the Young plan was proposed. Since the Dawes plan had been enacted, Germany was experiencing hyperinflation. The Young plan reduced war reparations to about 29 billion dollars, This could be payed off in about 58 years. Foreign supervision of finances in Germany would cease, remaining troops would leave German soil, and the plan also proposed the establishment of the Bank for International Settlements. -
The U.S. Stock Market Crash
The United States stock market crashes, causing investors to lose millions of dollars. This event signalled the beginning of the Great Depression. -
The Banks Fail
During the entire decade of the 30s about 9,000 banks failed. The Great Depression was well under way. People also began to panic that banks were not a safe place to keep their moeny. -
Smoot-Hawley Tariff Enacted
Around this time the Great Depression was taking it's toll on America. The Smoot-Hawley tariff was enacted to protect American businesses by raising prices on imported goods. -
Adolf Hitler Named Chancelor
Just after everything started dying down, Adolf Hitler was named Chancelor by President Hindenberg. Thus, the beginning of the Holocaust.
