She was born in Three Forks, Montana to a Shoshone Cheif. -
Stolen
Sacagawea was stolen, by an enemy tribe called the Hidatsa, at the age of twelve. She spent three years in their tribe until her soon to be husband purchased or won her.
{If Sacagawea hadn't been taken or purchased by Charbonneau she would never have of been able to help Lewis and Clark on their expedition.
1) She wouldn't have known the languages they needed to be translated.
2) She wouldn't have even been able to be invited along because she wouldn't have been with Charbonneau} -
Marriage
She was either bought, or won through gambling by a Canadian fur trader by the name of Toussaint Charbonneau. She bcame his wife at the age of 14 or 15. -
The Start of the Expedition
Lewis and Clark had come to ask for help from Charbonneau, but instead got more help from Sacagawea because she could speak the language of others as they journeyed. Sacagawea was a big help besides just translating. When they were going down a river one of the canoes tipped over, and if it wasn't for Sacagawea they would have lost lots of supplies and Clark's journal entries. -
First Born
Sacagawea gave birth to her first born, named Pompey. Some sources say he was born before the expedition, or during. -
Her Daughter
Sacagawea died a few months after giving birth to a daughter. Her name was Lizette. After Sacagawea had died a man by the name of John C. Luttig took full custody of Lizette and an older boy named Toussaint after the fort they had been fur trading in was burned down by the British and Indians during the War of 1812. After Luttig died in 1815 William Clark became the legal guardian. -
Sacagawea's Death
She died from an illness called diphtheria at the age of 26. She was the first ever woman to join The Corps of Discovery.
