1972 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement
this agreement between Canada and the United States originally dealt with attempts to reduce eutrophication of the Great Lakes. Since then, it has expanded to include toxic substances as well. -
1972 UN Conference of the Human Environment
This conference declared that humans are part of the environment as well as affecting it and being affected by it. It resulted in an action plan that focused on environmental assessment and environmental management. -
1973 Canada Wildlife Act
This act authorizes the acquisition of land by the federal government for the purpose of creating National Wildlife Areas. -
1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
This convention dealt with issues of sustainable fishery catches and conservation of both aquatic species and habitats. -
1986 North American Waterfowl Management Plan
They started declining number of water fowl (geese and ducks). This plan aim to protect wetland and upland territory. -
1988 RENEW
It is a strategy which outlines measures for the recovery of endangered species and the prevention of the worsening of the condition of currently threatened or non-endangered species. -
1994 Migratory Birds Convention Act (MBCA)
This act prevents commercialization of migratory bird by hunting and trafficking. -
1995 Canadian Environmental Assessment Act
This act was passed to ensure that environmental assessment would be preformed for projects carried out by federal Government or Crown corporations. -
Bill C-65 (was not passed)
This bill was not passed in Canada but would have been the first act to protect endangered and threatened species. -
1996 National Accord for the Protection of Species at Risk
This act was passed to protect endangered species and their habitats.
