Russia conquered Chechnya in early 1858 after many, many years of conflict and violence. Also, Imam Shamil and his fighters were murdered as he was trying to make Chechnya entirely Islam, which was against Russia's Russian Orthodox religion. One might think that conquering would settle the violence between the 2, however this only made things worse. -

Shamil Baseyev gained his reputation as a terrorist first in 1991 when he a Russian plan and directed to Ankara with the plan to hold a press conference to publicize the Chechen cause. During 1994 he became the leader of Chechen rebels and became the prime minister of Chechnya. He than continued his acts of terrorism until he was killed in 2006. -
