    Japan attacked at Port Arthur, Manchuria, which is one of the places they were fighting over. They were also fighting over Korea. Russias defeat caused unrest and later on, a revolt.

    200,000 approached the czars Winter palace wirh peaceful intentions. The czar was not in the palace, but his generals and police chiefs were. They went out and killed anywhere from 500-1000 unarmed civilians.

    Bloody sunday led top many strikes and much violence spread. Nicholas promised more freedom, reluctlantly.
  • WWI

    Russia wasn't equiped to handle the military or cost. They had weak generals and were in essance, slaughtered by Germany. 4 million had been killed, wounded, or taken prisioner.
  • Rasputin,

    A group of nobles murdered the Rasputin, the holy man. He was a very hard man to kill. he had "mystical powers"
  • March Revolution

    Women textile workers led a strike. 200,000 workers swarmed the streets, and at first soldiers fired at them, but later joined the people on strike and fired at their commanding officers.
  • Stepping Down

    The March Revolution caused the czar, Nocholas II, to step down.
  • Railway

    Germany arranged for Lenin to return to Russia, as they thought it would weaken them and cause more of a stir.
  • Lenin and Bolsheviks power

    They had seized power as Kerensky had lost the support of the people by making his decision to keep fighting. The rally cry was "All power to the solviets" and Lenin's slogan was "Peace, Land, and Bread" which was something the people liked.

    The red army was trying to characteristic 6, having central control and direction of the entire economy. It said that before, one person would work and everyone would eat for it, but the second one said that they have to work for their own food, and if you don't work, you don't eat.

    The white army vs the red army (Bolshecik army). The losses were devistating. 15 million dead, wide spread famine, and then the world wide flu epidemic caused chaos.

    Lenin temporarily reverted to a small scale version of capitalism. One reform allowed the pesants to sell their goods rather than hand them over to the government.He tried to encourage foregin investment, and while there was a small number of private owned businesses, most were controled by the government.

    Stalin started behind the scenes, and by 1924 he had many supporters. in 1928, he was in total command of the Communist Party.

    Based on socialist and democratic principles, but really, it was the Communist Party that had all the power.

    the farms had started to produce what they had before WWI. Lenin had not lived to see it.

    He enacted a 5 year plan, setting impossible goals and quotas. to reach the goals, they limited consumer products, leaving people without houses, clothes, food, and other necessities.

    The government siezed over 25 million privatly owned farms. They combined them and called them "Collabrative farms". Many pesants resisted by killing livestock and destroying the crops. He used terror and violence to make the pesants work on the farms. Between 5 and 10 million were killed directly because of his actions. millions of others were shipped to siberia.
    The Kulaks especially resisted, as they were a wealthy class of peasants. The governemnt decided to emilinate them.They were executed

    Document B shows the totalitaruanism characteristic of central control and direction of the entire economy because he is talking about how they have to catch up economically or otherwise the world will crush them. He mad a plan that in 10 years they'd catch up even though they were 10 years behind.

    Trotsky was forced into exile, leaving no opposition to Stalin. This left Stalin the power he used in an absolute dictatorship.

    Document C is a characteristic of totalitarianism because it shows 2 photos, one where a person had been edited out. The characteristic was number 4, a similar monopoly of the means of effective mass communication. He made them dissapear, It also shows the second characteristic, where everyone is led by one man. In this case, Joseph Stalin.

    They are increasing there energy production by over half from 1933 - 1937, but Joseph Stalin's statistics were overstated by over one third of the actual production, so that is false, but still it increased over that time. The propaganda poster is trying to get people to conmtinue to increase their energy production to where it actually needs to be.
    This is a T1, T6, and T2 because Joseph Stalin has complete control over the direction of the economy and is lying to its people about it.

    Document E shows characteristics of totalitarianism by trying to have central control and direction of the entire economy. The commandments are talking about how they'd change the economy, make it focused on all of the areas of the economy and making everyone work.
  • Great Purge

    Stalin turned against the Communist party. it was designed to kill anyone in his way. Thousands of people who helped the Bolsheviks were tired and executed for crimes against the state.

    Ideas are far more powerful han guns. We don't let out people have guns. Why should we let them have ideas?
    Education is a weapon whose effect depends on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.
    In this, he is showing the ideology to achieve a 'perfect final stage of mankind', as he is trying to control how they are and what they do.

    This is T1 and T2 because it is Joseph Stalin lieing to his people and planting/brainwashing ideas into their minds. And no one can gp against it.

    This poster is telling people that if you continue to work hard, your life will become easier and easier.
    This fits the T1 because it is Jospeh Stalin saying that people need to work hard and long in order for the country to obtain the perfect life.

    about 90% of all peasants worked on the farms, and by that time, the food produced had doubled from 1928.
  • Great Purge ended

    The Great Purge ended and Stahn had galned total control over Soviet Russia. He supposedly killed 8 million 13 thousand people.
