    Reign of Czar Alexander III  (1881-1894)
    Started prosecution of Jews and promoted the interest of the nobility. He was in favor of a one person rule, one religion throughout Russia and all people should be one race. *He was overall, very closed minded and dangerously close to wanting to be an absolute monarch. He left people very mad at Russia and ready to revolt.

    Reign of Czar Nicholas II (1894-1917)
    Nicholas was also in favor of absolute monarchy. He did not want anyone to be involved in government. The people of Russia were trying to industrialize and become more modern so that they could keep up with the rest of Europe. *Nicholas did nothing to help this. People were very outraged at him and he created the Duma, a elected legislature, so he could get people involved in the government and win back supporters. In addition to this people did not like how quickly Russia pulled out of the war.

    Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905)
    Russia and Japan were arguing about a small section of land. Japan was far more industrialized than Russia with both more land troops and a better navy. It was no surprise when Russia lost this war. *This loss resulted in an embarrassment of Russia because they are considered a powerful country at the start of the war. Russia also realized that they needed to industrialize. It was an all around wake up call to Russia.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    200,000 workers organized a peaceful protest and marched at the Czar's palace to protest their conditions. These workers wanted to improve the working conditions. It quickly turned violent when police opened fire on the civilians. *Czar Nicholas II was blamed for this despite him not even being at the palace. It also led to even more people hating him and the Duma being created.

    The Duma was an elected legislature set up by Czar Nicholas II. He set it up so that he was less of an absolute monarch. He set it up because people were very mad at him and he wanted to gain back their respect. He set the duma up to try and make up for the bad things he has done. *The duma ultimately gave him less power but it did not affect the way people thought of him.

    Russia was not yet industrialized and they struggled in the war. They were allied with Serbia, France. Great Britain, and eventually the United States. Russia fought on the Eastern Front of the war. Russia was one of the first to withdraw in 1917 and Russian people though that even that was too soon. *The people were mad that Russia stayed in the that long and it caused anger toward the Russian government.
  • Death of Rasputin

    Death of Rasputin
    Rasputin started out as a peasant and then became an exorcist as well as a psychic and mystic. He was close to the Czar's wife because she had a son with a blood condition and every time Rasputin was around her son his conditions would get better. *When the Czar went to fight in World War 1 he left the Czarina in charge but many people believed that Rasputin was actually calling the shots. This made people angry and Rasputin was eventually murdered by the nobility.

    The Bolsheviks wanted to bring reforms to Russia. They were called the Red Army and they were the Communist group. It was led by Leon Trotsky. *There was also a police force that killed anyone opposed to the revolution. The red army and white army fought in the Russian revolution and whatever army won would institute their values and changes upon Russia.

    The Czar got blamed for everything in Russia. when Bloody Sunday happened he got blamed even though he wasn't there. He got blamed for WW1 when he was fighting in it. He also did not listen to the people when they wanted to industrialize. *he was forced to abdicate and a provisional or temporary government has replaced him. Eventually the government fell because people did not want to fight in the war. They overthrew the provisional government.

    Russian Civil War
    The Russian civil war was the fighting that occured when the Red Army and White Army fought. People on the Red side occupied the center of Russia and the White side surrounded them with many Allies. *eventually, the White Army did not have enough supplies and could not coordinate the attacks. The Red army won the civil war. However, this left Russia in shambles. Many people died and went hungry. Not helping this cause, was the fact that people had to give up their grain for the war.

    The USSR stands for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. It was made up of self governing republic states. *The communist party held all the power and wanted to prevent nationalism as much as possible.

    Lenin was the head of the Soviet government for two years. He was very instrumental in creating the USSR. * when he died, it cause much commotion because people did not know who would replace him. Candidates for his replacement got very mad at each other and there was a lot of competition.

    Joseph Stalin was one of the candidates to take over after Lenin died. He want up against many others but still managed to gain power. *he became a dictator and many people began to fear him. He gained his power by being scary and hating everyone opposed to him. Any person or thing that was a threat to his power was exiled and gotten rid of.

    Leon Trotsky's Exile
    Leon Trotsky was another one of the people likely to replace Lenin. He was in heavy competition with Joseph Stalin. However, Stalin was a dictator and he hated anyone who threatened or challenged his power. *Lenin had Trotsky exiled. Stalin the went on to become a dictator and leader of the USSR.
