Civil War
The Russian Civil War was to tear Russia apart for three years. The civil war occurred because after November 1917, many groups had formed that opposed Lenin’s Bolsheviks. These groups included monarchists, militarists, and, for a short time, foreign nations. Collectively, they were known as the Whites while the Bolsheviks were known as the Reds. -

Red Terror
An assassination attempt on Lenin by the Socialist Revolutionary Fanny Kaplan leaves him seriously wounded. The attempt, together with the murder of Uritskii, sparks a period of mass arrests and executions known as the ‘Red Terror’. -
Soviet Union
The Soviet Union is created. Lenin helped establish the United Soviet Socialists Republic, a communist country. He worked with Joseph Stalin. -
Stalin rises to power
Lenin dies, leading to a power struggle within the party. Stalin emerges as Party leader. His rival Leon Trotsky is dismissed, then exiled and finally murdered in 1940. -
Five Year plan
Adoption of first Five-Year Plan, with the state setting goals and priorities for the whole economy, signifies the end of the New Economic Policy. -
World War ll
Soviet Union and Nazi Germany conclude a non-aggression pact; Germany invades Poland, triggering World War II.
