Japan Attacks Russia
Russia broke an agreement it had with Japan involving sharing territories. As a result, Japan contrued a suprise attack on Russia at Port Arthur, Manchuria. News of repeated Russian losses sparked unrest at home and led to a revolt in the midst of a war. -
Bloody Sunday
Abour 200,000 workers and their families approched Czar's Winter Palace. demanding better working condititons, personal freedom, and an elected national legislature. Nickolas the second ordered his troops to fire on the crowd, killing several hundred people and wounding over 1,000. This situation provoked violence for the future. -
The First Duma Met
The moderates wanted Russia to become a constitutional monarchy like Britain. Czar was hesitant to share his power. The Duma was dissolved after ten weeks. -
The FInal Blow
Nicholas the second made the fateful decision to drag Russia into World War. They were no match for Germany. Russia lost the war due to lack of new artilery. -
March Revolution
Women textile workers in Petrograd led a city wide striker. 200,000 workers stormed the streets protesting. At first the soldiers fired at them, but later sided with them. -
Bolshevik Red Guards
Armed factory workers stormed the Winter Palace in Petrograd. They took over governmant offices and leaders of the privision of governmaent. Kerensky and his collegues dissapeared. -
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
Russia surrendured a large part of its territory to Germany and its allies. The humiliating terms of this treaty triggered widespread anger amoung Russians. They objected to the Bolsheviks and their polices and to the murder of the royal family. -
Civil War
Several Western nations went military aid forces to Russia to help the White Army. Proved far more deadly than the earlier revolutions. Around 14 million Russians died in the three year stuggle. -
New Economic Policy
lenin temporarily put aside his plan for a state-controlled economy. Instead, he resorted to a small-scale version of capitalism called the New Economic Policy. This policy allowed peasants to sell their surplus crops instead of turning them over to the government. -
Lenin Suffers From Stroke
Lenin suffered from a stroke, but survived. This incident set in motion competition for heading up the Communist Party. Two of the most notable men were Leon Trotsky and Joseph Staliin.
