The Women's March of the month prior cross the entirety of Petrograd in protest of the War as well as the resulting food shortages. Following the disbandment of the Monarchy, the new authority in Russia; the Soviets, is formed. On March 15, Tsar Nicolas II abdicates and removes his son from power. His brother also refused and the Provisional government was formed in replacement of the monarchy. -
April 1917
Enemy of the Tsar and exiled leader of the Bolshevik wing of Russian Social Democratic Party returns to Petrograd on a train from Switzerland by order of Germany and Finland. -

The July Days
Industrial workers and soldiers stage an armed demonstration in protest of the Provisional Government. Lvov, the leader of the Provisional Government resigned and Alexander Kerensky promptly crushed the protests. The headquarters of the Bolsheviks were promptly raided and an arrest warrant was issued for Lenin. Lenin fled to Finland The soviets would continue to lose power in the Provisional Government and the chance for a peaceful revolution was over. -
Kornilov Affair
The commander of the Russian army, General Kornilov attempts a coup of the Provisional Government. While ultimately unsuccessful, this attempted coup secured power for the Bolsheviks within the Russian public. Russia was also declared a republic on the 14th of September. -

The October Revolution
Bolshevik forces captured Petrograd as well as the last center of the Provisional Government: the Winter Palace. The Decree on Land and Peace promptly took effect; leading to the Russian removal from the war as well as distribution of private property. Lenin declared a new Soviet Government on the 8th of November. -

The Constituent Assembly met on 5th & 6th of January but as promptly dissolved by the Bolsheviks. Likewise the Council of People's Commissars formed the new Red Army. -

The Russian Civil War
The Russian Civil War experienced anti- soviet/ Leninist opposition battled the Red Army. Fought in Siberia, Ukraine, and the Baltics, the Unified Red Army defeated White Army forces by 1920.Paired with quick mobilization of the Red Army, these forces were able to unify the nation. -

Brest-Litovsk Treaty signed on the 3rd removed Russia from the First World War at heavy cost, including one-third of the old empire’s population, one-third of its railway network, half its industry, and numerous other important resources. On March 8th the Social Democratic Labor Party changed it name to the Russian Communist Party as well as move the capital from Petrograd to Moscow. -
The First Constitution
This constitution granted equal rights to both men and women in the Soviet Republic. -

The Murder of the Romanovs
Emperor Nicolas II, his wife, and his 5 children were brutally murdered by Bolsheviks led by Yakov Yurovsky. -

Lenin hears of uprisings in central Russia and sends a telegram to Penza on the 11th calling for the execution of 100 rich peasants. An assassination attempt on Lenin on the 30th led to the beginning of the mass arrests and executions later known as the Red Terror.
