    Nicholas' father Alexander II steps down from the position. He enacted new policies on industrialization, but they came with a cost. There was terrible working conditions, low wages, and child labor.

    Russian Marxists Split into 2 Groups
    The people of Russia did not like the dictatorship; they wanted a government in which the protectorate, or working people, would rule the country. People formed new political parties in order to showcase a need for revolution, and the more radical party was called the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks believed that they will sacrifice anything for change, and the leader of the party was Vladimir Lenin.

    Russia and Japan were competing for control over Korea and Manarchia, and the countries signed an agreement over those territories. Russia broke this agreement, and Japan attacked Port Arthur, Monarchia.The Russian people were distroat and angry over the losses, and fighting broke out in Russia.

    Bloody Sunday
    After the attack of Port Arthur, the people revolted and 20,000 citizens marched to the Czar's Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. They marched for better working conditions, more personal freedom, and an elected national legislature. Nicholas II told generals to start shooting on the crowd, killing more than 1,000 people; the people were extremely angry, and this sparked more strikes and violence across the country.

    Nicholas II decided to enter WWI, but the Russian military could not face up to the German army. The Germans had well trained soldiers, generals, and machine guns, and because of this, they killed more than four million Russian soldiers. Because of the war, Russian prices were inflated and food supply was slow, and the people were not able to have a sustainable lives.

    Bolsheviks Take Power
    Nicholas II stepped down from the czar position, and factory workers, called the Bolsheviks Red Guards, marched to Winter Palace and took over the government. The Bolsheviks reformed the government by having farmland distributed to peasants, giving control of factories to workers, and they signed a treaty to have peace with Germany. People of Russia were finally getting a say in the government, and thier voices were heard.

    Women Strike in Petrograd
    A five-day riot started because of the shortage of bread and fuel, and nearly 200,000 workers filled the streets. Soldiers of the government started shotting on the crowd, but they eventually joined the strike. People were tired of the government making bad choices, and the government was not listening to the people.

    Treaty of Brest-Litovsk Signed
    To end fighting with Germany, Russia signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Under this treaty, Russia had to give a portion of thier land to Germany. This angered the Russian opposers of the Bolsheviks govenrmetn becaus ethey thought it was a digrace to give up Russian soil.

    Because the Bolsheviks gained control, some Russians did not agree with their form of government, so they formed the White Army and revolted against the new government. Many people died in this civil war form fighting, hunger, and worldwide flu. In the end, the Red Army won the battle, and they proved to the Russian people that they had power and wanted to keep it.

    Stalin becomes Dictator
    Vladimir Lenin died in 1924, and someone had to take over the Communist Party. Lenin thought that Stalin was not a good fit because he was cold, hard, and impersonal. Sadly, it was too late and Josep Stalin gained complete control of the party, and Russia faced more trouble with a ruthless dictator in contol.
