  • Czar Alexander III (in power 1881-1894)

    • Alexander III accused Jews of buying too much land (condoned + encouraged)
    • Alexander promoted nobles
    • 3 principle aims were outocracy (one man rule) , orthodoxy ( One religion) , and national homogenuity (one race) = Set stage for Russian people being unhappy with the Czar
  • Reign Of Czar Nicholas II (1894- 1917)

    • Believed he should rule the Russian Monarchy
    • He created the Duma: an elective legislature which he turned into a constitutional monarchy = People hated him on his belief for him ruling the Russian Monarchy, and how he ignored Russian problems because he wanted money. Ignored peasants and was leader during times of WWI, Russo-Japanese war, Bloody Sunday, etc.
  • Russo- Japanese War (1904- 1905)

    • Russia and Japan were competing for territory, which then led to the Russo-Japanese War -Japan had the advantages of troops and a navy = Russia lost and were humiliated, which caused more civil unrest. People blamed the czar, and the people wanted to change Russia's gov to a constitutional monarchy
  • Establisment of Duma (1905)

    • an elective legislature created by czar Nicholas II which he turned into a constitutional monarchy = follows R-J war + Bloody Sunday; done to improve czarship
  • Bloody Sunday (January 22, 1905)

    • 200,000 workers went to present czar with a list of grievances
    • The police opened fire, killing 100 and injuring 3,000 = Long term consequences were uprising across the country and lessened beliefs about gov. Blamed the czar, another reason for Duma creation
  • Russia's Participation in WWI (1914- 1918)

    • Russia participates in war, with czar Nicholas going to fight in war while his wife dealt with the country = Czar was blamed for Russia's failure
  • Death of Rasputin (December 30, 1916)

    • Rasputin is drowned in a river, after being shot twice, and poisoned = made Russian people unhappy, czar was blamed for death of Rasputin
  • Bolshevik Revolution

    • Bolsheviks overthrow the Provisional gov in 1917 = Led to the USSR
  • Abdication of Czar Nicholas II/ est. of provisional gov

    • Russia struggled in economy, industrializing and with agriculture
    • Made Duma to change gov to constitutional monarchy
    • Czar was abdicated because of Russia's failure in WWI = He was disliked because he ignored the people's issues and cared only about what he wanted which caused revolts
  • Civil War (1918-1920)

    • Followed the same form of other revolutions
    • Red Army = Led to establishment of USSR
  • Establishment of USSR (1922-1991)

    • Not true communism
    • Self-Governing republics discourage nationalism = Develops Stalin's rise to power
  • Stalin's rise to power (1922-1927)

    • Manipulates his way into total power, despite Lenin's concerns = Stalin comes in command of Communist Party by 1928, later becoming dictator of Soviet Union
  • Lenin's death

    • He died of a stroke
    • Leon Trotsky competed with Joseph Stalin for his spot = Set up competition of who would replace him
  • Leon Trotsky's Exile

    • Trotsky is exiled by Stalin = Removes all competition for Stalin to be able to rule Russia
