Marxist revolutionaries disagreed over revolutionary tactics. The more radical Bolsheviks were ready to risk everything. The charasmatic Vladimir Lenin became the leader. -
Attack at Port Arthur
Russia and Japan were competing for control of Korea and Manchuria. Though the nations previously signed treaties over the land, Russia broke them. Japan foughr back by attcking Port Arthur. These events sparked violence at home and started a revolt during the war. -
Bloody Sunday- The Revolution of 1905
About 200,000 workers and their famalies approached the Czar's winter palace in St. Petersburg demanding better working conditions. Over 1,000 people were wounded, and several hundred were killed. These events provoked strikes and violence. -
The Duma
The frist Duma (Russias first parliment) met on this day. The Duma wanted to make Russia a constitutional monarchy like Britain. The Czar did not want to share his power, however, and dissolved the Duma after 10 weeks. -
World War 1
Nicholas II led Russia into WWI. Russia was not prepared to handle the military and economic costs of the war. They were soon defeated by the Germans. -
Working Revolution
Women textile workers in Petrgrad ed city-wide strikes. Soldiers were ordered to shoot the women for protesting and not doing their work. The soldiers, however, sided with the women and refused to shoot. -
Bolshevik Red Gaurds
Factory workers in Petrograph took over government offices. These workers were called red gaurds. Because of the take over, Kerensky and his colleagues disappeared. -
Treaty of Brest-Livetsock
Russia and Germany signed the trety of Brest-Livestock. Russia surrendered a large part of its territory to Germany and its allies. This triggered widespread anger among Russians. -
End of Civil War
The Russian Civil War ended. Several western nations and the United States sent military aid and forces to Russia to help the white army. However, the red army prevailed and beat the white army. -
New Economic Policy
Lenin restored order to Russia, He resorted to the New Economic Policy (NEP). Because of this, the country slowly began to recover. -
New Dictator
Lenin, who had suffered from many storkes, suffered his last one. This was the perfect oppurtunity for Stalin. After Lenin's death, Stalin began his climb for power.
