    Petrograd Soviets formed
    When some thirty to forty socialist intellectuals and workers gathered in the Tauride Palace on the afternoon of February 27, 1917 to attempt to provide leadership to the revolution already happening in the streets of the capital, they harked back to the Soviet of Workers' Deputies thrown up by the 1905 Revolution. Declaring themselves a Temporary Revolutionary Committee of the Soviet of Workers' Deputies, they appealed to workers and soldiers.

    At the beginning of February, Petrograd workers began several strikes and demonstrations. on February 22 workers at Putilov, Petrograd's largest industrial plant, announced a strike.
    The next day, a series of meetings and rallies were held for International Women's Day. workers marched to nearby factories bringing out over 50,000 workers on strike. and caused riots that turned into revolution.

    March Revolution was actually the February Revolution (Russia used the Julian calendar then). It was caused by Russia's terrible state in the war against Germany, extreme lack of basic necessities and an alliance of socialists and liberals who wanted reform (a democratic government, even the socialists largely did not call for a communist state at this time). Strikes in Petrograd were countered by the police which caused riots and general mayhem. It then spiraled into chaos.

    In January 1918, the long-awaited Constituent Assembly convened. Those supporting Lenin and the Bolsheviks were a minority in the Assembly, and, after the Assembly's first day, Soviet militiamen with bayonets dispersed the gathering. Lenin defended the move by saying that "the people" would soon realize that the Constituent Assembly opposed their interests and that by abolishing the Assembly the Bolsheviks were fulfilling their goal of "All power to the Soviets."

Around midnight, Yakov Yurovsky, the commandant of The House of Special Purpose, ordered the Romanovs' physician, Dr. Eugene Botkin, to awaken the sleeping family and ask them to put on their clothes, under the fake reasoning that the family would be moved to a safe location because of impending chaos in Yekaterinburg. the royal family was then ordered into the basement and executed by secret police.
