Joseph Stalin takes power
It is disputed when exactly Stalin overthrew Rykov, but it was some time shortly after Lenin's death. Stalin served as the Soviet Union's leader during the Great Depression and World War 2. Stalin had a cult of personality and was highly revered by the party.Stalin served until his death in 1953. -
Georgy Malenkov takes power
Malenkov's reign was very short lived. He came into power immediatly after Stalin's death, but he quickly got inot a power struggle with Krushchev and lost. -
Nikita Khrushchev takes power
Krushchev served fairly long as the Soviet Union's leader. Krushchev didn't lose power until 1964, after the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was forced into retirement by the party. -
Leonid Brezhnev takes power
Brezhnev takes power after Khrushchevs retirement and serves for nearly twenty years. Brezhnev was not as Liberal as Khrushchev. Under Brezhnev the Soviet UNion began taking steps back towards Stalin era rule. -
Yuri Andropov takes power
Andropov had a fairly short lived rule. He only served for about a year and a half. Andropov attempted to improve the Soviet economy during his rule, and stopped production of space weapons. -
Konstantin Chernenko Takes power
Cherneko was placed in office agianst Andropov's request. Cherneko had a very short lived rule, and didn't do much under it. He did boycott the Olympics though. -
Mikhail Gorbachev takes power
Under Gorbachev's rule he attempted to modernize and liberalize communism and the Soviet Union. Gorbachev allowed elections for the first time in decades. His actions eventually led to the downfall of the Soviet Union in 1991. -
Boris Yeltsin takes power
Boris Yeltsin is elected as the first president of the newly formed Russian Federation. Under his rule the government had major corruption, and economic disasters struck. -
Vladimir Putin takes power
Under Putins rule their is an enormous amount of corruption. Putin gives few freedoms to the Russian people, Putin has control over most of the government. -
Dmitry Medvedev takes power
Medvedev is elected as the president of Russia. He served as Putin's prime minister, and he appoints Putin to be prime minister. Putin remains in power and continues to have control. Nothing really changes
