    Russia's capital is moved to St. Petersburg as Peter the Great takes power and becomes a czar.

    Even though Russia had the largest army in the world for this war, their lack of stable government and supplies caused them to be unable to arm all of their soldiers. Russia suffered a terrible loss and their already weak economy was hit hard.

    Vladimir Lenin Controls Russia
    The devastation in Russia made the people want their lives back. A large amount of people are living in poverty. Even more people have lost hope in Russia. Their sadness only made them more determined for a change. The protested, "Peace, Land, and Bread!". Tsar Nicholas II is overthrown and his family are excecuted by the Bolsheviks. Vladimir Lenin is now in control of Russia and has a plan to rise up the failing country.

    Russia joins Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The people wanted an organized government so badly and now they finally got one. In the beginning, it seemed as if being Russia becoming a communist country solved all their problems. The economy was booming, the middle class thrived and the social status of "peasant" wasn't as occupied as before.

    Stalin leads Russia with a command economy and leads Russia into rapid industrialzation, catching them up with the Rest of Europe. Living standards increase, and Russia's economy and growth flourish.

    Stalin and Hitler Sign Pact
    Stalin wanted to ensure that Germany wouldn't be a threat to Russia so on this day, both Stalin and Hitler agree that between them, there with be no agression. For a little while, (and by that a mean a couple months), this pact would hold up. That is until Hitler invates Poland and WWI begins.

    Hilter Invades Poland/Beginning of WWII
    Hitler breaks the non-agression act and leads his German troops to Poland, taking over thier territory, and eventually taking the land as his own. This causes the beginning of the second world war and leads to Hitler imprisoning the Jews and other minorities.

    After being attacked by the German by surprise, Russia went to war a second time for four years. Although this time they were more economically stable that the last time and suffered less casulaties than Germany. But, because they had no time to prepare, the USSR was damaged in the first couple years. After the war was over and the Germans were defeated, the Russian army invaded the concentration camps and liberated them.

    The U.S. and Russia are at odds over which place would be the most powerful. They both wanted to be the nation that the other ones looked up to, so they both got their best men (and women) together to try and show eachother up the the developments in modern weapons, and the space race.

    The Soviet Union Liberates Auschwitz
    Taking down Hitler and his German army, the Soviet Union get to work on righting his wrongs. Hitler had placed innocent people (mainly Jews) in extermination and labor camps, the most famous being Auschwitz. Even though the people were only imprisoned for a few years, the death toll was large.

    Gorbachev was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1990-1991. But before he became the leader he was the general secretary of the Soviet Union from 1985-1991. He is known best by successfully leading Russia out of the Cold War which ended in 1991.

    The fall of the USSR wasn't planned, but surley expected. Just as the people once did when they first protested after WWI, the same thing was happening again. The first time they wanted a better economy, more supplies, and trustworthy leader. Now that they had had leaders making decisions for them, they felt as if their daily lives were too controlled and were sick of Russia being communism.

    After Boris Yeltsin resigned in 1991, Putin became the president before elections were ever held. He officially became president in 2004. Dmitry Medvedev succeeded him on 2008 because he couldn't run again. When he was re-elected in 2012, Medvedev became prime minister, the job Putin had been doing during Medvedev's presidency.
