Ivans's father, Vasili III of Russia, died and Ivan seceeded him. His mother Yelena Glinskaya acted as his regeant. At age eight he replaced her with a group of noblemen who wanted power. -

When she died Ivan went into a deep depression. Ivan thought she was murdered by the Boyars. Because of this he left the throne, but the Muscovites begged him to return. He agreed, but demanded for the ability to punish traitors & be granted absolute power of the region. -
