Peter began the twenty-one year war to gain territory in te Baltic states. Though it was long and bitter, Russia ended being succesful and became a major European power. This was the defining point of Peter's reign. -
St. Petersburg Founded - May 1703
Named in the ruler's honour, Peter captured the new city for the Swedish fortress of Nyenskans. -
St. Petersburg becomes Russia's New Captial
Peter the Great named St. Petersburg Russia's new captial in 1712. He made St. Petersburg the captial because first, it was a port that had accesst Europe and secondly, he made a beautiful, modern city that could be used as a symbol of Russia's rising power. -
The Table of Ranks - 1722
The Table of Ranks was introduced by Peter the Great in 1722 and was a formal list of positions and ranks in the military, government, and court of Imperial Russia.
