Rasputin's death
Rasputin is invited to the palace. First, prince Yusupov gives him cakes with cyanide, but he does not die. Then he is shot in the stomach by prince Yusupov, but as that does not kill him he is later shot in the head, then wrapped in chains and thrown into the river. -
Protests in Znamenskaya square
50 demonstrators are killed in Znamenskaya square after the Tsar orders the commander of the soldiers in Petrograd to supress the protests with 'all force necessary'. -
February revolution
This revolution lasted about eight days.
It was centered in Petrograd and involved mass armed demonstrations by factory workers and clashes with the last troops loyal to the Tsar.
It resulted in the Tsar abdicating three days later, and the end of the autocracy. -
Tsar nicholas abdicates
Nicholas is under pressure to abdicate, and finally does so on may the 11th, leading to the formation of the provisional government. -
April theses released and Lenin returns to Russia
The April Theses was a set of directives released by Lenin after he returned from exile. They were first announced in a speech at a meeting in Petrograd (or St Petersburg).
They offered people 'Peace, Bread and Land'. -
July days
These are mass armed demonstrations by soldiers and industrial workers against the provisional government, encouraged by the Bolsheviks. -
Kornilov mutiny
General Kornilov marches troops on Petrograd in an attempt to 'purge' the provisional government of revolutionary aspects. This fails when Kerensky arms Bolsheviks, who stop Kornilov.
Kornilov is later imprisoned. -
Russia is declared a republic
The provisional government declares Russia a republic, a state that controlled all of Russia and its empire. Although this was decided by the Provisional government, power over the country and armed forces is split between the provisional government and the Petrograd soviet.
The republic only lasted for about six weeks, and ended when the Bolsheviks took power. -
Bolsheviks take over Petrograd
The red army moves into Petrograd and take over bridges, the telephone exchange and other key buildings, cutting the city off from the rest of Russia.
They attack the winter palace at 9:40 and successfully capture it at 2:00.
The leader of the government, Alexander Kerensky, fled the city. -
