Economic theory that the success of a nation depends on the supply of goods and amount of international trade is unchanged. Also suggests the economy be regulated by supply and demand as well as commericial interests. -
Jamestown colony
It was a first permanent settlement in Virginia. It was built on the banks of the James river. Even today it is still a great tourist attraction. -
House of Burgess
First representative government in the United States. It met once every year. The first order of business was to set a minimum price for the sale of tabacco. -
Plymouth Colony
Second permanent English settlement in America. Found by the settlers including a religious group called pilgrims. -
Mayflower Compact
First governing document of the plymouth colony. It was drawn up to establish a temporary government primarliy to prevent some from leaving the colony and failing to provide their labor along with others. All 41 male members signed this docoument. -
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
It was known to be the first written constition. It was written by a group of puritan pilgrims that were persecuted because of their religion and desired to establish their own reforms. -
Culpepers Rebellion
Uprising againist proprietary rule in Northern Carolina which was caused by the people inforcing the British Navigation laws. -
Glorious Revolution
It was a plan to overthrow King James II of england. It was lead by a group of English Parliamentarians to revolt againist the King by his unreasonable demands. It was also known as the Revolution of 1688. -
English Bill of RIghts
Created by the Parliament of England that placed William and Mary on the throne. It also allowed subjects to petition the monarch, and made it a replacement of the crown to seek peoples consent before passing certain laws. -
Salem Witch trials
Famous trial back in 1692 where 19 people were accused of witchcraft. The trials ended in May 1693. -
First Great Awakening
Period of time where religion became increasingly prevalent within the British and North America societes. -
French and Indian War
Wawr in America in which France and its Indian allies opposed England. French believed that the Englishmen were intruding on there land, because land disputes the war started. It was later ended by the Treaty of Paris. -
Albany plan of union
Proposed by Ben Franklin which was an early attempt of forming the colonies under one government during the french and indian war. It was not passed because legislators did not want to give up control of their power. -
Pontiac's Rebllion
It was a battle fought between a group of indians and the british. It was caused bu how the British treated the indians after the seven years war. The British won this battle. -
Proclamation Line of 1763
Issued by King George III which was to organize Great Britians new North American empire and to stablize relations between Native North American torugh regulation of trade, settlement, and land purhcases. -
Sugar/Revenue Act
Passed by Parliament that reduced taxes on sugar and molasses. In turn, it helped lower the rates that were affecting the British West Indies. -
Stamp Act
A law passed by the British Parliament introducing a tax on legal documents, contracts, licenses, publications, in North America colonys, It was caused by the Bristish debt from the seven years war. It was repealed in 1766. -
Virginia resolves
Series of revolutions passed by the virginia general assembly in respoonse of the stamp act. Defined as one of the first acts of open revolution to British law. -
Sons of liberty
It was a secret underground organization of rebels which opposed british rule and supported the move for American Independence. -
Townsend Act
Law that taxed glass, oil, lead, paper and tea. It was deisgned to collect revenue from the colonists to pay the salaries of governors and judges. -
Boston Massacre
Incident where a British troop killed 5 colonists. It was caused by the British troops coming in trying to enforce the kings rule: the citizens got tired of it and started to riot at the soldiers which they aimed and fired on the people. -
Gaspee Incident
A ship named the HMS gaspee ran into shallow water which a group of people led by Arbaham Whipple and John Brown attacked, boarded, looted and torched the ship. It was also known as the Gaspee Affair. -
Committees of correspondence
Organization that passed information colony to colony about how england was violating colonists right. It was usually spread by courers on horse back. -
Tea Act
Act which taxed tea that was imported, three pence per pound which was less than previous taces. It was made to bring assistance to the East india company which had burdened fiancially with eighteen million pounds of unsold tea. -
Boston Tea party
After officials refused to return three hundred shiploads of taxed tea to Britian, a group of colonists boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it into the harbor. Some of the colonists dressed as Mohawk indians. -
Intolerable Acts
Acts that King George put onto the 13 colonies. He punished them for dumping tean into the harbor at the Boston Tea party. It made it so that every citizen in Boston to be watched over by a british soldier. -
First Continental Congress
It was a convention of delgates from twelve of the thirteen colonies to discuss the intolerable acts passed by British Parliament. They also wrote a letter to the king asking for independence. -
Edenton tea party
It was a political protest in North Carolina that was lead by women boycotting againist the tea act. 51 women led by Penelop Barker. -
Second Continental Congress
Another convention to discuss the colonial war effort and more toward independence. The congress acted as the "National" government of the colonies. -
Mecklenburg Resolves
Document which was signed in North Carolina that gained independence from Britian but evidence of this has yet to be found. Also known as the Mecklenburg Declaration. -
Halifax Resolves
Document written by North Carolina colonists saying all the colonies declare themselves independent from Britian. -
Declaration of Independence
Legal document that seperated US from British rule as independent colonies. Guarantted our rights and freedoms of America. -
Articles of Confederation
The first system of government established by the United States after the colonies achieved independence. It created a weak central government and left authority to the states. It also created the union of the states. -
Treaty of Paris
The treaty brought an end to the American Revolution and recognized the United States as a soveriegn nation. It was signed by the British and U.S. representatives. -
Land Ordinance of 1785
This document made that the western land could be sold as public land. Used a township to section the pieces of land. -
Shay's Rebllion
Was a protest by farmers againist the many foreclosures of farms during the late 1700s in Massachusetts. They wanted the government to print more money and to stop putting farmers in jail for not being able to pay their debt. -
Constitional Convention
It was a meeting that took place in Philadelphia. Delegates from the various states met to create a plan for a structured government which came to be completed in September 1787. -
Land ordinance of 1787
Document that stated that the land north of the Ohio river and east of the Mississippi could be settled. Also said that those states would become part of the United states. -
Federalist/Anit Federalist papers
Papers where the federalists wrote that defended the constitution and resured americans that the states wouldn't try to overthrow it. The anti federlist papers resented the making of the constitution. -
Whiskey Rebellion
It was a tax on whiskey that was a plan of Alexander Hamilton to pay the off the national debt. Then farmers resented the tax and acted out by attacking excise agents and a marshall.
