In the 1980 presidential race, Reagan was running against the Democrat Jimmy Carter, and the Independent John Anderson. Where Reagan won 44/50 states picking up 489 electoral votes with Carter coming in second with 49, and Anderson with 0. 69 days into his presidency, Leaving a speaking event at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., Reagan was 1/3 people shot by John Hinckley, Jr. He was only ten feet away from Reagan when he shot. It hit the presidents limo which then bounced off and into Reagan’s chest. Reagan was lucky he wasn't a good shot because he nearly died the way it was. Reagan's two terms end
Reagan strived to acomplish "peace through strength." During his two terms he incressed defense spending 35 percent, but fought to improve relationships with the Soviet Union. In meetings with the Soviet leader, he negotiated a treaty that would ban intermediate-range nuclear missiles.
