Emperor Theodosius decided to divide the empire between his 2 sons. Honorius received the western half with Rome as its capital and Arcadius received the eastern half with Constantinople as its capital.

However,the division did not improve the situation in the western half of the Empire. The Visigoths were able to cross the limes and ransack Rome.

After the Pax Romana , the stability of the empire was disrupted when Rome faced a series of military, political, economic and social problems. Then, the arrival of Visigoths ended up sinking the Roman Empire.
