This was a group of men to protect the revolutionaries from the enemies. They were the people who decided who the enemies were. Robespierre justified the terror he brought by saying that it was the only way of keeping the vision of the revolution pure. Most of the "enemies" were fellow revolutionaries who just didn't agree with his views, so they were executed. -

Most of the members feared for their lives and they saw that Robespierre was corrupt. They arrested and executed him without trial. That was the end of the Great Terror and the radical group of the revolution.
