American Revolution
There were several key causes of the American Revolution like the protests in Boston, French and Indian war, intolerable acts, taxes and laws. It was a colonial revolt that lasted over 18 years. The Patriots in the 13 colonies defeated Britain with the help of France. The victory resulted in gaining independence from Great Britain, which established the United States. -
The writing of the Declaration of Rights and Grievances
It was a document written by the stamp act congress, which declared that taxes imposed on British colonists without their formal consent were unconstitutional. It allowed all rights and freedoms that were deserved by the people. It stated that the colonists had the same rights as British subjects living in Britain. It also said that only the colonial assemblies had a right to tax the colonies. -
Passing of Intolerable Acts
Punitive laws passed by the British parliament after the Boston tea party. The laws were created to punish the Massachusetts colonists for their defiance in the Tea Party protest in reaction to changes in taxation. Parliament was fed up with the colonial antics. The laws took away self-governance and historic rights, which caused the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. -
Publishing of Common Sense
Common Sense was written by Thomas Paine to explain clearly to the average man what needed to be done to gain independence from Great Britain. His main points in common sense were about gaining independence from England and the creation of a democratic republic. He wanted the people to fight for what belonged to them. -
The signing of the Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence was written and signed to help the world understand why the colonies wanted to start their own country. The declaration explains some principles of the founding fathers that the government of the United States still follows today. The main purpose of the declaration was to explain that all men are created equal and have the fair right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Everyone was born with rights that can’t be taken away by anyone except God. -
Adoption fo the Articles of Confederation
The articles of confederation were adopted to preserve the independence and sovereignty of the states. It was introduced to 13 different articles that granted powers to the states and to the federal government. The articles failed because they didn’t give congress and the national government enough power. -
Shays Rebellion
Shays rebellion was a protest created by farmers in Massachusetts that was against the debt and tax collection practices of the states government. The rebellion soon led to the new Constitution. The farmers of the protest that led to farm foreclosures or imprisonment in some cases. -
The Start of the Constitutional Convention
The convention was held in Philadelphia to address the problems of how the central government was weak. During the convention delegates met and decided on how America was going to be governed. The final decision was made and it was decided that the best solution to the country’s problems was to set aside the articles of confederation and write a new constitution.
