  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    This ends the French and Indian War / Britain won / The causes of war was land competition, control of trade routes, alliance w/ Native Tribes, and because they were traditional enemies / The battle took place in North America / Britain won because they pumped $8 million to fund it, they had a larger army & navy, they had colonial militia, and they had Iroquois Allies / It's called "French and Indian war" because British named it after their opponents / This Treaty included land control.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    An indirect tax on sugar / It was indirect in hopes to curb smuggling / Issued Writs of Assistance (The British customs officers can search ships whenever) / Was introduced by the New British Prime Minister, George Grenville / Decreased molasses from 6 pence to 3 pence / The colonists were the main targets of this act / The British benefited the most from the sugar act / This act ended because it was repealed by the Revenue Act.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    A direct tax on all printed goods such as cards, dice, documents etc. / Additional tax; felt no rights were violated / Met with colonial resistance / Sons and Daughters of Liberty boycotted (they got investors to stop getting into printed goods businesses) / The British Parliament passed this act / Again the British benefited from this act and the colonists were harmed / The cost of taxation was 10 shillings / The Parliament voted to repeal the act in 1766.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    Required that Americans must house and feed British soldiers in the colonies / The British Parliament again issued this tax / This act lasted for 4 years. It ended in 1770 / It ended because the Parliament realized that the cost of enforcing it was outweighing the benefits.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Repel Stamp act / Tax on glass, paint, tea, etc. / It was issued by Charles Townshend / Similar to Navigation act / Money used to finance troops in colonies / Repealed in 4 years (1770) / It was repealed on everything but tea.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Americans were rioting / An American threw a club at a soldier and the soldiers gun went off / More soldiers started shooting / Killed 6 Americans / Crispus Atticus (an African) was the first one killed / The Americans were rioting because they didn't like the Acts that had been put on them / After the Massacre, there was a huge trial to prove the British innocent for firing the first shot.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The Americans poorly dressed as Indians went onto a tea cargo ship and dumped cartons of the tea company's tea into the Boston Harbor / Damages to cargo / $1-3 million worth of tea dumped / It was dumped to show their anger / As a result, British shut down Boston Harbor until every carton of tea that was dumped was paid for.
  • Tea Act

    Tax on tea / British East India Co. was in danger of bankruptcy / British did not want their best income of money to go bankrupt, so they gave more money to them by having a tax on tea / Sons of Liberty assemble to react / This act was the result of the Townshend act being repealed.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    Also known as the Coercive Acts / 1) Boston Port Act. This clsoed off the trade routes/ 2)Mass GOV'T Act. This gave the governor more power and shut down charters/ 3) Justice Act. This sent rebellious colonists to Britain for a trial/ 4) 2nd Quartering Act. This restored imperial control over the American colonies / 5) Quebec Act. This put a permanent administration in Canada / All these were passed by the British Parliament / The benefit was to gain control over the colonies once again.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    2nd Continental Congress
    Not all colonists believed in independence / New faces appeared (Franklin, Hancock, Jefferson) / Issued reconciliation vs. Independence / This was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania / They nominated Washington to lead the army / They voted for Washington and to create the Continental Army out of the militia units.
