Road to Revolution Timeline of Events

  • Treaty of Paris 1763

    This treaty ended the French and Indian War which was between England and France. The treaty outlined that the French had to give up their territories in the new world. This was imposed by the British.
  • Proclamation Act

    The proclamation act prohibited colonists from living west of the Appalachian Mountains. This act was created by the British to give the Indians land that was taken.
  • Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act was a tax imposed by the British which taxed molasses which was very popular.
  • The Stamp Act

    Law passed by the British that taxed any piece of paper of the colonists.
  • The Quartering Act

    A British Law that gave British troops the ability to get a room in any American Colonist's home.
  • Stamp Act Congress

    A group of colonists that were elected. Formed to a response of the Stamp Act.
  • Declaratory Act

    A response from the British government on the repeal of the Stamp act. It stated that Parliaments taxing authority was the same as in America.

    Townshend Act

    Another response by the British on the retaliation of the colonists of the Stamp act that imposed a sort of tax on items such as glass, lead, paints and paper.
  • Boston Massacre

    This massacre was when British troops killed five unarmed colonists in Boston in a protest.
  • Committee of Correspondence

    The committee of correspondence was a way for colonists to communicate to one another who lived in different colonies.
  • Tea Act

    A British tax on tea for the colonists. This tax will be the last straw for the colonists.
  • Boston Tea Party

    A response by the colonists about the Tea Act where some colonists dressed up as Indians and threw many chests of tea over ships.
  • Intolerable Act

    Response by the British government on the Boston Tea Party. The Intolerable Act had four different new laws that restricted colonists.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Colonists sent this to the British government which announced that they did not believe in the British government and that they will be at war with them.

    First Continental Congress

    A meeting of twelve of the thirteen colonies that was a response to the Intolerable Acts and in the end they voted to boycott British commerce.
  • Declaration of Rights and Grievance

    A document written by the Stamp Act Congress that stated that the taxes the British imposed was unconstitutional.
