It managed the colonial war effort, and moved incrementally towards independence, adopting the Declaration of Independence. -

It helped prove they could stand up to one of the most powerful armies in the world -
Declaration of Independence
An announcement that the 13 American colonies regarded themselves as thirteen newly independent sovereign states. They were no longer a part of the British Empire.
