War costs money ---> Britain has a war debt ---> Taxed the Colonies. -
The Proclamation of 1763
Banned colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. Colonists believed they had the right to live where they wanted to. -
Sugar Act
Put a tax on sugar and molasses. There were harsh punishments for smugglers. -
Stamp Act
Colonists were forced to buy stamps for documents like wills, contracts, newspapers and playing cards. -
Quartering Act
British soldiers had to be housed and fed by the colonists. -
Townshend Acts
Britain didnt tax goods IN the colonies. Instead they taxed on imports included lead, tea and glass. The Writs of Assistance allowed British customs officials to search the ships. -
Boston Massacre
British soldiers attacked colonists resulting in about 4 deaths. -
Tea Act
Tea must be imported directly from the British East India Co. Tea is taxed 3 pence a pound. -
Boston Tea Party
90,000lbs if tea was destroyed, the tea was worth about 1 million dollars in todays money. The Sons of Liberty organized this act. Over 5,000 people watched, and 116 participated. -
Coercive/Intolerable Acts
British closed the port of Boston until the tea is payed for. All trials are moved to England. Town meetings are banned. The Quartering Act is strengthened. -
The First Continental Congress
All colonies but Georgia were present. The actions they took were to demand repeal on the intolerable acts, train militias, organize boycotts and to meet again in May of 1775. -
Paul Revere's Ride
Paul Revere warned the colonists that the British troops were coming and it was the night time. -
Lexington and Concord
Also called the Shot Heard 'round the World. British Troops planned to take munitions in Concord. 77 minutemen were ready to fight. British troops killed 8 farmers. This was the beginning of war. This act made a large impact on the whole world.
